Soft 404
A soft 404 occurs when a web server returns an HTTP 200 (success) status code for a URL that does not actually contain the requested content. Instead of a proper 404 error, the server returns its homepage, a generic error page, or a template — with a success status code. In AI visibility auditing, soft 404s inflate adoption metrics for standards like llms.txt, ai.txt, and agents.json.
